چکیده

[1] The upper 200 m of the sediments recovered during IODP Leg 302, the Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX), to the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean consist almost exclusively of detrital material. The scarcity of biostratigraphic markers severely complicates the establishment of a reliable chronostratigraphic framework for these sediments, which contain the first continuous record of the Neogene environmental and climatic evolution of the Arctic region. Here we present profiles of cosmogenic Be together with the seawater-derived fraction of stable Be obtained from the ACEX cores. The down-core decrease of Be/Be provides an average sedimentation rate of 14.5 ± 1 m/Ma for the uppermost 151 m of the ACEX record and allows the establishment of a chronostratigraphy for the past 12.3 Ma. The age-corrected Be concentrations and Be/Be ratios suggest the existence of an essentially continuous sea ice cover over the past 12.3 Ma.

Surface water productivity and paleoceanographic implications in the Cenozoic Arctic Ocean

[1] Study of bulk nitrogen contents and isotopic composition in Arctic Ocean sequences (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302) over the past 60 Ma revealed changes in the export flux and sources of sedimentary nitrogen. The paleoproductivity calculated from the fraction of organic nitrogen to total nitrogen is distinctly lower (<20 g C m 2 a ) during the ice-covered Neogene compared ...

Extreme decay of meteoric beryllium-10 as a proxy for persistent aridity

The modern Antarctic Dry Valleys are locked in a hyper-arid, polar climate that enables the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) to remain stable, frozen to underlying bedrock. The duration of these dry, cold conditions is a critical prerequisite when modeling the long-term mass balance of the EAIS during past warm climates and is best examined using terrestrial paleoclimatic proxies. Unfortunately,...

Pliocene cooling enhanced by flow of low-salinity Bering Sea water to the Arctic Ocean

Warming of high northern latitudes in the Pliocene (5.33-2.58 Myr ago) has been linked to the closure of the Central American Seaway and intensification of North Atlantic Deep Water. Subsequent cooling in the late Pliocene may be related to the effects of freshwater input from the Arctic Ocean via the Bering Strait, disrupting North Atlantic Deep Water formation and enhancing sea ice formation....

Quaternary paleoceanography of the central Arctic based on Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Arctic Coring Expedition 302 foraminiferal assemblages

[1] The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) Hole 4C from the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean recovered a continuous 18 m record of Quaternary foraminifera yielding evidence for seasonally ice-free interglacials during the Matuyama, progressive development of large glacials during the mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) 1.2–0.9 Ma, and the onset of h...

Introduction to special section on Cenozoic Paleoceanography of the Central Arctic Ocean

[1] In late summer 2004, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) conducted one of the most transformational missions in the almost 40 year history of scientific ocean drilling: the Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX) [Backman et al., 2006; Moran et al., 2006a]. This technically challenging expedition [Moran et al., 2006b] to the Lomonosov Ridge near 88 N recovered the first long-term Cenozoic ...
